Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye was officially nominated on Sunday as the candidate of the ruling party, the CNDD-FDD, for the presidential election scheduled for 2027.

Elected in May 2020 with 68.72% of the vote, the head of state is now seeking a new term, in line with the Constitution, which allows for two seven-year terms.

In power since 2005, the CNDD-FDD continues to consolidate its dominance over Burundi’s political landscape. Following the legislative elections in June 2025, the party became the only political formation represented in the National Assembly for the 2025–2030 term.

Before rising to the presidency, Évariste Ndayishimiye held several key positions, including Minister of the Interior and Public Security, as well as military and civilian chief of staff at the presidency.
