Burundi plans to launch a national ecosystem dedicated to e-commerce in 2026, an ambitious initiative aimed at deeply transforming the country’s economy and inspiring other African nations, authorities announced during a meeting on the subject.

Currently holding the presidency of the African Union, the country intends to make this project a continental model, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, Edouard Bizimana.

For his part, the Director General of the Telecommunications Regulation and Control Agency (ARCT), Samuel Muhizi, stated that the official launch is scheduled for June 2026, marking a key step in the growth of e-commerce in Burundi.

The meeting brought together several stakeholders, including banking institutions, insurance companies, and transport sector businesses, to review the progress made toward the operationalization of this structuring project.

Initiated in 2023, this initiative is led by the ARCT in partnership with the Federal Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Burundi, along with several public and private actors, with the goal of accelerating the development of the country’s digital economy.
