The electoral campaign for the presidential election scheduled for April 10 in Djibouti officially began on Friday and will run until April 8.
Two candidates are competing for the highest office: incumbent President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, representing the Union for the Presidential Majority (UMP) and seeking a sixth term, and Mohamed Farah Samatar, leader of the Centre of Unified Democrats (CDU).
A total of 256,467 voters are registered on the electoral roll and are expected to cast their ballots, including 162,833 in the capital, Djibouti City, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior.
The electoral setup includes 712 polling stations across the country, of which 413 are located in the capital.
On the eve of the official campaign launch, the competing parties and media outlets signed a joint charter, committing to ensure a “fair and transparent” campaign.
