The Government of Ghana has announced the return to the original name of the capital’s main airport. Kotoka International Airport has officially reverted to its original designation: Accra International Airport.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transport explained that the change will involve a gradual update of all official materials, including administrative documents, relevant regulatory texts, airport signage, aeronautical publications, and digital platforms.

According to the authorities, the decision aims to restore a “historical and internationally recognized” name. The designation “Accra International Airport (ACC)” already remains the official reference used in documents from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

For the record, the airport was renamed in 1969 in honor of Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a military officer who was killed in 1967 during an attempted coup. The site where he died is now the airport’s forecourt.
