Burkinabè authorities announced that they have adopted a decree dissolving all political parties and formations in the country. Here are their explanations.

This decision “is part of the refoundation of the State and follows an in-depth assessment of the party system, which revealed numerous abuses in the application of the legal framework governing political parties and formations in our country,” declared the Minister of Territorial Administration and Mobility, Émile Zerbo.

According to the authorities, political parties and formations are struggling to mobilize Burkinabè citizens, which reflects “a failure” in fulfilling their constitutional mission.

Through this measure, they claim to seek the preservation of national unity, the strengthening of coherence in government action, and the opening of the way for a profound reform of the political governance system. At the same time, a draft law repealing the legislative framework governing, among other things, the creation, operation, and financing of political parties and formations, as well as the status of the Leader of the Opposition, has also been adopted, according to the Ecofin Agency.
