Malawian forward Temwa Chawinga, who plays for Kansas City Current, has won the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year, after finishing at the top of the league’s scoring chart this season.
Temwa Chawinga is the first player ever to win the MVP title in back-to-back seasons. Although she was sidelined in October due to a right groin injury, she also won the NWSL Golden Boot with 15 goals and three assists in 23 matches.
Six of her 15 goals were game-winning goals, matching the record she set last year during her first season in the league. The 27-year-old also tied the league record by scoring in eight consecutive regular-season NWSL matches.
The Malawi-born Ballon d’Or nominee became, in May, the fastest player to reach 25 regular-season goals.
