Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers, the country’s highest executive body, on Tuesday approved a new regulation establishing the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission.

In a statement, the Council of Ministers said that the newly formed commission will be responsible for leading and coordinating the country’s efforts to “use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes in accordance with international frameworks.”

The statement emphasized the need to advance applied nuclear technologies to serve the nation’s development ambitions, particularly in the areas of electricity access, industrial development, health, science, and research.

“After extensive discussions on the matter, the Council of Ministers unanimously decided that the regulation would enter into force upon its official publication,” the statement added.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has also appointed Sandokan Debebe as the Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission. Debebe previously served as Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister.
