Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina on Monday appointed Ruphin Fortunat Dimbisoa Zafisambo as the country’s new Prime Minister, a week after dismissing all members of the previous government.

According to Rajoelina, the new Prime Minister has the ability to “restore order and the people’s trust.” The president has tasked him with addressing recent damages, reviving reconstruction efforts, and correcting the dysfunctions observed in public administration.

General Zafisambo, who has served as Chief of Staff at the Prime Minister’s Office since 2021, is expected to form his cabinet in the coming days.

The president emphasized that the new government’s priorities will focus on improving living conditions for the population and implementing key national development policies.

“We are going to change our strategy in public governance,” he declared, expressing his commitment to responding to the people’s aspirations.

Rajoelina stressed that the immediate priority remains the rapid restoration of electricity and water services, and announced, alongside the Prime Minister, the development of a six-month action plan to tackle the country’s main challenges.
