Kenya officially announced on Monday its bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 2029 or 2031, according to Athletics Kenya, the governing body of the sport in the country.

The bid will be presented during the ongoing World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, said Barnaba Korir, executive member and director of youth development at Athletics Kenya, emphasizing the country’s determination to stage this major biennial event in Africa for the first time.

According to Korir, Kenya has finalized its bid dossier and will take the necessary steps to comply with the requirements of World Athletics, the international federation overseeing national athletics bodies.

If successful, Kenya would become the first African country to host the World Athletics Championships.

Kenya had already lost its bid for the 2025 Championships—awarded to Tokyo—due to infrastructure challenges, while the 2027 edition was awarded to Beijing.
