Somalia has launched a national electronic visa portal, accessible via evisa.gov.so. This initiative aims to simplify procedures for international travelers, modernize the immigration process, and strengthen national security.

Developed with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the platform allows visitors to submit their visa applications online, eliminating the need to go through embassies. In addition to offering greater convenience for tourists, professionals, and the diaspora, the system introduces integrated security checks and dedicated oversight to ensure that only eligible individuals can enter the country.

Beyond administrative modernization, the e-visa also carries a strategic economic dimension. Visa fees will now be collected directly into public accounts, strengthening transparency and national finances. The government also hopes to enhance the country’s attractiveness to investors and boost its still nascent tourism sector. In the long term, the system is expected to facilitate regional integration, as Somalia finalizes its accession to the East African Community (EAC), where free movement is a core principle.

The government is banking on this system to better control and monitor migration flows, while offering travelers a more reliable and predictable experience.
