Morocco’s local players’ team has won its third title at the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), defeating Madagascar 3–2 in the final on Saturday at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Nairobi.

The Moroccan team once again made history by claiming a third continental crown at the CHAN. On Saturday evening, at Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi, the Atlas Lions beat Madagascar 3–2 in the final, confirming their dominance in this competition reserved for players competing in their domestic leagues. Already champions in 2018 and 2020, Morocco has further enriched an already impressive record, strengthening its status as a reference in African football.

The match began at a furious pace. Madagascar stunned the Moroccan defense in the 9th minute through Félicité Mantasoa. But far from losing composure, the Atlas Lions quickly regained control. In the 27th minute, Youssef Mehri equalized with a precise strike, restoring confidence to his teammates. Just before halftime, Oussama Lamlaoui put Morocco ahead with a powerful header (44th), sending his team into the break with the lead.

A wonder goal seals the victory

The second half saw Madagascar fight back into the game thanks to Toky Rakotondraibe, who leveled the score in the 68th minute. Everything seemed up for grabs, and suspense lingered until the final stretch. It was then that Lamlaoui, already decisive, produced the moment that will be remembered. In the 80th minute, with a stunning shot from midfield, he lobbed the Malagasy goalkeeper to secure Morocco’s winning goal. This strike, described as “historic” by observers, crushed Madagascar’s hopes and sealed Morocco’s triumph.

This victory crowns the work of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and the coaching staff, who built a competitive, disciplined, and daring squad. The local players, often overshadowed by their counterparts playing in Europe, once again proved they are a true asset for Moroccan football. By winning three titles in six years, Morocco has showcased the depth of its talent pool and the quality of its domestic league, capable of producing high-caliber players.

In the third-place playoff, Senegal defeated Sudan 4–2 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in Kampala. But this Kenyan edition will above all be remembered for Morocco’s confirmation as the undisputed master of the CHAN. Three trophies, entertaining football, and rare consistency on the African stage: the Atlas Lions now stand as the model to follow.
