Due to the municipal elections scheduled for Thursday, July 17, 2025, Togolese authorities have announced the temporary closure of land borders across the entire country.
The measure, effective from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., was made public by the Ministers of Territorial Administration, Hodabalo Awaté, and Security, Calixte Madjoulba.
This decision aims to ensure the smooth conduct of the vote in a peaceful and secure environment, in accordance with the current legal framework. It serves as a preventive measure in response to potential risks of disruptions to the electoral process, in a sociopolitical context considered sensitive.
“The election must take place in peace, security, and social cohesion,” emphasized the two ministers, who called for the understanding and responsibility of border users, according to Togofirst.
Such measures are common during electoral periods in Togo. However, in a regional environment marked by ongoing security tensions—particularly in the north—and popular demonstrations in Lomé, the decision carries a particular importance for stability.
The July 17 election aims to elect 1,527 municipal councilors across the country’s 117 communes.
