Cameroon’s presidential election will take place on October 12. The incumbent president has already declared his intention to run for another term.

Cameroonian President Paul Biya, aged 92, announced on Sunday evening his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election, seeking an eighth term at the helm of the country he has led since 1982.

“I have therefore decided to respond favorably to the pressing calls coming from all ten Regions of our country and from the diaspora,” Biya stated on social media.

“Rest assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the magnitude of the challenges we face. The situation of young people and women will be at the heart of my priorities. Together, there is no challenge we cannot overcome,” he added.

According to Elecam, the independent body in charge of electoral operations in Cameroon, nearly 7.9 million people are registered on the provisional electoral roll.

The deadline for submitting candidacies for the presidential election is set for July 21, while the official campaign period is scheduled for September.
