Nigerians wishing to travel to the United States on a non-immigrant visa will now be granted single-entry permits valid for three months, according to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, thereby canceling the previous multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years.

“We wish to emphasize that, as is the global norm, visa reciprocity is an ongoing process and subject to review and modification at any time, such as increasing or decreasing the number of permitted entries and the validity period,” said the statement published on the embassy’s website, according to Reuters.

A Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs official told local media that Nigeria has no such visa policy toward U.S. citizens.

In June, the Trump administration added Nigeria to a list of 36 countries that could face travel restrictions if they failed to address various security and diplomatic concerns within two months.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar did not respond to requests for comment.

Nigeria received nearly one-fifth of the non-immigrant visas issued by the U.S. government in Africa in 2024, according to the State Department, ranking second only to South Africa in terms of such visas issued during this fiscal year.
