Mali’s National Transitional Council (CNT) has unanimously adopted a draft revision of the Transitional Charter, a measure that grants a five-year renewable term—without elections—to the Head of State, Army General Assimi Goïta, according to local media reports.
Approved by the Council of Ministers on June 12, the bill allows General Assimi Goïta, currently serving as Transitional President, to become President of the Republic of Mali once the revised charter takes effect.
This reform is part of the recommendations from the Inter-Malian Dialogue held in April 2025 and follows on from the National Refoundation Conferences held in December 2021. It also comes at a time when Malian authorities are seeking to balance institutional stability and transparency in the face of persistent security challenges.
Quoted by the media, CNT President Malick Diaw emphasized that "this is a major step forward in the refoundation of Mali," adding that "the adoption of this text reflects the popular will, as it stems from the National Refoundation Conferences."
