The second session of the College of Heads of State of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES)—bringing together Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso—will be held in December 2025 in Bamako, announced Mali’s Transitional President, General Assimi Goïta.

The decision was made in consultation with Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, and Niger’s President, General Abdourahamane Tiani, all members of the Confederation, according to an official statement released in Bamako.

The first summit of AES Heads of State was held in July 2024 in Niamey, six months after the announcement of the withdrawal of the three countries from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Despite mediation attempts by the Presidents of Senegal and Ghana, the AES countries have maintained their decision to leave ECOWAS.

However, discussions have since begun between both parties to establish a new framework for cooperation.

ECOWAS has recently reiterated its commitment to maintaining a constructive dialogue with the three AES countries.
