Kenya has unveiled a new strategy supported by the Universal Service Fund (USF) to ensure universal broadband access across the country over the next five years.

Currently, broadband covers about 96% of the country's population, said David Mugonyi, Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), the national regulatory body for the telecommunications sector, during a press briefing in Nairobi.

"This strategy reflects our collective aspiration to leverage innovation, partnerships, and regulatory foresight to extend communication services to the most remote areas of our country," he stated.

The plan outlines several measures to mobilize resources from the USF, which is partly funded by telecommunications license holders and development partners, to reduce the digital divide in the country.

The Chairperson of the CA, Mary Mungai, said the plan prioritizes extending broadband connectivity to schools and health centers, especially in underserved areas. It also includes provisions for assistive technologies to ensure equal access to communication services for people with disabilities.
