The African Union Commission (AUC) has officially launched the strategy and action plan for the 2026-2035 African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP), during a ceremony held in South Africa. On this occasion, the Kampala Declaration was also unveiled.
This declaration marks a crucial step in the implementation of the CAADP’s 2021-2035 action plan, which aims to transform Africa's food systems.
The objectives include mobilizing $100 billion, increasing agricultural production by 45%, tripling intra-African trade, and halving post-harvest losses.
The new plan focuses on sustainable food production, the development of agro-industrialization and trade, increased investment mobilization, food and nutrition security, and socio-economic inclusion.
It also aims to build resilient food systems and strengthen their governance.
"We recognize that agriculture is not just about production, but about creating a holistic system that encompasses production, transformation, distribution, and consumption. The strategy and action plan also provide for sustainable and resilient agri-food systems for a healthy and prosperous Africa," said Moses Vilakati, AU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.
According to him, effective implementation of this strategy would address structural challenges such as food and nutrition insecurity, biodiversity loss, gender inequalities, unemployment, forced migration, emerging diseases, inflation, and the economic weakness of states.
