The Mauritanian capital will host, on May 9 and 10, the first edition of the Morocco-Mauritania Parliamentary Forum, a joint initiative between the National Assembly of Mauritania and the two chambers of the Moroccan Parliament, officials in Nouakchott announced on Monday.

This meeting aims to "create a space for dialogue, consultation, and sustainable parliamentary cooperation" between the two countries, in the context of increased political rapprochement between Rabat and Nouakchott.

The forum is part of a sustained diplomatic dynamic, recently marked by the visit of the President of the Mauritanian National Assembly, Mohamed Ould Meguett, to Morocco, as well as a series of high-level bilateral meetings. The project, launched in 2022 and relaunched in early 2024, gained momentum after the meeting between King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani last December in Casablanca.

A parliamentary friendship group, consisting of 20 Mauritanian deputies from both the majority and opposition, was set up earlier this year to support this initiative.

This parliamentary forum takes place as Morocco-Mauritania relations strengthen in the economic, security, and infrastructure sectors.
