Kenya has just released its first national artificial intelligence strategy for the period 2025-2030.

The new document outlines a clear vision for the adoption of ethical, inclusive, and innovation-driven AI. It is part of the country's broader digital transformation program and sends strong signals to international tech companies, which are closely monitoring the evolution of regulatory frameworks in emerging markets.

Although designed at the national level, this strategy reflects a broader dynamic, namely the adaptation of international AI governance standards to emerging contexts.

It articulates Nairobi's ambitions around several key areas, including infrastructure, data sovereignty, sector-specific use cases, and responsible innovation. It also outlines the main elements of future legislation.

Data governance is one of the main pillars of the document. Kenya expresses its intention to build an AI ecosystem based on local frameworks, respecting confidentiality, cybersecurity, and ethical principles.

The targeted sectors are those where AI can have a rapid and transformative impact: health, agriculture, financial services, and public administration. Use cases such as assisted diagnostics, personalized medicine, and the automation of administrative services are identified as priorities, with particular attention to managing ethical risks.

The strategy also envisions the development of a robust national digital infrastructure, supported by public-private partnerships.

With this document, Kenya aims to position itself as a key player in the African debate on AI, reports wearetech.africa.
