The first Grammy Award for Africa was presented to the young South African singer Tyla, who was competing with 4 Nigerian stars.

The 22-year-old South African singer won the very first Grammy for Best African Music Performance on February 4th in Los Angeles.

Tyla was honored for her song "Water," in a category where she was nominated alongside Ayra Starr, Davido, Asake, and Burna Boy.

Her song thus inaugurates the Grammy award for Best African Music Performance, launched this year.

Tyla's song "Water" became a global phenomenon in September, notably thanks to TikTok.

Moreover, this song became so famous in the United States that in January it ranked 7th on the Billboard Hot 100, the weekly ranking of the 100 most popular songs in the country published by Billboard magazine.
