The captain of the Atlas Lions and right-back for PSG, Achraf Hakimi, was awarded the Marc-Vivien Foé Prize for the best African player in Ligue 1 on Monday.

The announcement of the winner, made by Radio France Internationale, came on Monday: unsurprisingly, the Moroccan international, who was a finalist in the Champions League with PSG, was recognized.

Hakimi finished ahead of Ivorian striker Evann Guessand of Nice and Senegalese midfielder Habib Diarra of Strasbourg. The vote, organized by RFI and consisting of around 100 voters – journalists, consultants, and former players – overwhelmingly favored the Moroccan.

Second last year, the captain of the Atlas Lions now succeeds Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was playing for Olympique de Marseille at the time.

Created during the 2008-2009 season, the Marc-Vivien Foé Prize was first awarded to the Moroccan striker of Girondins de Bordeaux, Marouane Chamakh. It honors the memory of the former Cameroonian midfielder who died of a heart attack during the Cameroon–Colombia semi-final of the Confederations Cup on June 26, 2003, in Lyon.
